Signify (formerly known as Philips Lighting), just announced a new family of LiFi systems, dubbed Trulifi, which leverages existing (or future) lighting systems to create a high-speed, secure wireless network. Trulifi currently targets professional markets, where traditional RF (radio frequency) based wireless networking technologies are not ideal, are prohibited, or are not reliable due to interference or other environmental factors.

Trulifi consists of fixed optical wireless transceivers that can be purpose built or retrofitted into existing Philips lighting systems and adapters that connect directly to PCs.

“Trulifi underlines our strategy to unlock the potential of light to address new high-growth markets.” Said Olivia Qiu, Chief Innovation Officer at Signify. “Through our global presence, large installed base and industry knowledge, we’ll help existing and new customers to leverage their lighting infrastructures to receive reliable, secure, high-speed wireless communication…Wherever there’s light, there can now be wireless communication."

According to Signify, the new family of Trulifi LiFi wireless products offers connectivity at speeds up to 150 Mbps (Megabits per second) over large spaces, such as meeting rooms and office floors, and they support seamless handover between Trulifi optical transceivers, should a user be roaming around the space. A USB-attached adapter is necessary for a PC to connect to a Trulifi LiFi network, and its sensor must obviously be exposed to the light being emitted from one of the fixed optical wireless transceivers, as you would expect from a networking technology that uses light to transmit data.

Higher-speed, fixed point-to-point Trulifi transceivers will also be available that can be linked to provide up to 250MBps of bandwidth when running a wire isn’t possible.
